Caterpillar Student UX Challenge

Each year, UX students at Bradley work with CAT to solve a design issue. This year we were tasked with redesigning how they take in mobile submissions for fuel analysis.

The Client

With CAT having offices in Peoria, collaborating with them is very easy. During the semester we took a trip to one of their labs, as well as presented our final products in person at the end of the semester. Throughout the whole process, each team had two mentors that we would check in with every 1-2 weeks. Check-ins would range from discussing project plans to asking questions so teams were as confident as possible in their designs.

My Process

For this project, two teammates and I were grouped up. We first started by completing a competitive analysis of how other companies handled the user side of oil analysis. Using what we knew about CAT, as well as the competitive analysis, we created a variety of user personas. From there we created a design system as well as user flows. After getting wireframes approved by our team lead, we began making a prototype in Figma. We put that prototype in usertesting.com to get more feedback then made some final adjustments.

The whole process lasted effectively the entire semester and was a lot of work. After submissions, teams were judged by a panel consisting of people from many different parts of CAT. Based on the panel, my team came in second overall with praise for how we were able to shorten the submission process.
